Volunteer doctors help create “opportunities” for patients to catch up on opportunities …. they may have missed.

Ban Phaeo Hospital has established a unit to conduct a mobile cataract surgery project for the underprivileged in remote areas. From 2003 to the present, it has grown into the country’s largest mobile surgical unit and continues to travel to assist patients in remote locations. Over the course of operating the mobile cataract surgery project for the underprivileged in remote areas, the hospital has developed the potential to provide ophthalmic services as an eye and cataract center. It is an eye center that is fully equipped with modern standards and equipment and has ophthalmologists specializing in the fields of retina, cosmetic and reconstructive ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis and immunology to support the examination and treatment of patients with complex eye diseases. It has been upgraded to an ophthalmic disease referral center in Health Service Area 5 of the Ministry of Public Health by providing care to patients with complex eye. Over the course of more than 16 years, it has helped over 100,000 blind patients see light again.

The Suthirat Foundation recognizes the importance of carrying out such operations for poor patients who do not have access to public health services.

Consequently, 1.05 million baht has been allocated to support the mobile cataract surgery project, which will be used to establish mobile units and purchase equipment for cataract surgery for the underprivileged in remote areas in 2022, totaling 18 locations.
